Ormazabal days in Moldova — technology, intelligence and the architecture of a smarter energy future

At the heart of Moldova’s industrial district, among transformers, circuit panels, and precision instruments, HABSEV Grup turned its brand-new assembly hall into a living example of energy innovation. The occasion — Ormazabal Days in Moldova — was not a conventional conference but an experience designed to connect people, technology, and purpose. The decision to host the event in a working industrial space, rather than a hotel ballroom, sent a powerful message: the future of energy is being built on the ground, not just discussed on stage.

HABSEV Grup, one of Moldova’s leading system integrators for power distribution and automation, organized the event together with Ormazabal, the Spanish technology group known across Europe and Africa for its expertise in smart grids, medium-voltage solutions, and digital substations. Ormazabal — part of the Velatia Group — is a recognized global innovator in designing networks that are not only efficient but intelligent: grids that can self-adjust, prevent failures, and communicate in real time.

The program unfolded as a structured journey through the energy transition. Gheorghe Habed, Director of HABSEV Grup, opened the event with a clear statement: Moldova’s transformation will depend on its ability to integrate technology that is both sustainable and secure. He described HABSEV’s new assembly facility not merely as a production site, but as a technological hub for integration, testing, and education — a bridge between manufacturers, operators, and engineers.

Cristina Pereteatcu, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, set the strategic context. Her keynote outlined the government’s priorities for 2025–2030: full-scale digitalization of networks, cybersecurity embedded in every layer of the system, and a regulatory framework that promotes interoperability among operators. “Modern energy systems must learn to think, to analyze, and to react,” she said — positioning digitalization as both a necessity and an opportunity.

The vision — Ormazabal’s blueprint for smart infrastructure

The international perspective came from Enrique Lopez, Ormazabal’s Managing Director for Western Europe and Africa, who captured the audience’s attention with a clear message: reliability in today’s energy world is built through intelligence, not redundancy. His presentation focused on digital substations based on the IEC 61850 standard, automation technologies that minimize outages, and solutions that enhance network resilience. Real-world data from projects across Central and Eastern Europe demonstrated the measurable impact of smart automation on system reliability and performance.

Following Lopez, Iker Martin Cuarango, Product Manager for Smart Grids, and Iker Saez de Guinoa, Regional Manager for North-West Africa and the Rest of Europe, unpacked Ormazabal’s innovation ecosystem. They showcased how advanced distribution systems — secondary and primary — integrate with SCADA and ADMS platforms, enabling predictive maintenance, fault localization, and live data analysis. Their technical clarity translated complex systems into business value: reduced downtime, lower operational costs, and improved decision-making through digital intelligence.

Meanwhile, Natxo Cartón Perosanz, Regional Sales Manager, guided the participants through Ormazabal’s product portfolio, from compact medium-voltage switchgear to modular automation-ready systems. The live demonstrations in the hall brought the technology to life — cables humming, relays signaling, and software interfaces visualizing energy flow in real time.

The discussion moved from theory to practice during the panel of distribution operators, featuring Premier Energy Distribution, GUP ERES, and Dnestrenergo. The dialogue was refreshingly pragmatic. Participants spoke openly about the challenges of network modernization, standardization, and cyber resilience. They also confirmed the performance of Ormazabal’s systems already deployed in the field. Premier Energy’s representative summed it up succinctly: “The equipment works so well that we don’t even remember where it was installed — it just runs flawlessly.”

This testimony highlighted a deeper truth — technology is no longer an experiment but a proven asset in the region’s operational networks. It reinforced the notion that Moldova’s modernization is not waiting for the future; it is already underway, powered by partnerships between global innovators and local implementers.

As discussions gave way to networking sessions and guided tours, the atmosphere in HABSEV’s new facility reflected optimism and purpose. The assembly hub, freshly equipped and designed for next-generation integration, symbolized more than industrial capability — it represented Moldova’s readiness to embrace a smarter, more connected energy model.

In the closing remarks, both Gheorghe Habed and the Ormazabal team underlined the importance of sustained collaboration. Innovation, they agreed, must be continuous, data-driven, and built on trust between institutions, companies, and engineers.
